Motor City Ferrets is a private, no-kill ferret Shelter & Rescue Organization. We are licensed and inspected annually by the Michigan Department of Agriculture.  The shelter operates in a private home in Hazel Park.  The “staff” consists of Shelter Mom Nanci & Shelter Dad Alex.  We typically have 10-30 ferrets in the shelter at any given time.

As of 2026, MCF has rescued more than 1200 ferrets.  Approximately 80% of our ferrets will find a new home, while the other 20% will spend their final days in the Shelter.  Our shelter can only provide a group home setting, so we endeavor - through our careful screening and adoption process - to find loving, permanent homes for all of the ferrets we care for.

Surrender

We offer shelter to any ferret in need, regardless of background, age or health. If you need to surrender your ferret, contact us with relevant information.  If we're able to take in your ferret, we’ll schedule an appointment.  You’ll need to bring a small supply of the ferret’s current food, any paperwork you have, and anything that the ferret is attached to.  We do not charge a surrender fee, but donations are appreciated.

Volunteer

The shelter operates in a small home.  Volunteer help is appreciated, but help with the regular daily routine is sometimes difficult to arrange due to our busy schedules.  We do welcome folks to come by and simply play with the crew.  After all, with the humans so busy the critters always need more attention.   If you're interested in volunteering, get in touch to schedule a visit!

Donate

The Shelter is supported by income from adoption fees, our shop, fundraising efforts, and donations.  Monetary donations are the most useful for our shelter, as the primary portion of our expense budget is veterinary care.

We also appreciate donations of new or used ferret supplies; in fact, we’ll take animal supplies of all sorts any time.  We work with several other shelters, so we always tell folks if you’ve a few things for different critters to donate, bring it all to us and we’ll figure out which of our partners needs what and move everything along.

Here are some things we use time and again, if you’d like to donate supplies directly:

  • Laundry Detergent:  "Free" and “HE” type, and Clorox2
  • Rugs:  small, washable floor rugs
  • Gift Bags:  of any size / type
  • Baby wipes & Paper Towels
  • Food:  Orijen Cat & Kitten Grain-Free & Go! Fit & Free Grain-Free kitten
  • Gerber's plain chicken or turkey baby food:  the price to beat is $1 per jar if you ever see on sale!
  • Nutrical (or Nutristat, Ferretvite)
